Autism: Communication can be non-verbal.
This morning, Charlie and I had a moment. As I was sewing, nostalgically listening to my favorite French songs, Charlie laid his head on the table next to the speaker. When I looked at him, he looked back at me with a smile. It was the most genuine smile. Autism doesn’t lie. I could read him, I could understand him. It lasted less than five seconds but it felt like Charlie and I just had a long discussion.
I realized for that moment how little it mattered that Charlie is unable to talk. He communicated with me this morning. The way he looked at me right in the eyes and smiled was him saying “I like this French song, mommy”. He didn’t say it out loud but I heard it. Talking is overrated anyway.
