In my book, All Across The Spectrum, I talk about Charlie a lot but also about myself as a mother and as someone who was diagnosed with high functioning autism in adulthood. Here’s another short excerpt:
My friendships always seem to wither, no matter how hard I try. I can’t help but wonder why life keeps throwing people at me who are not meant to stay. I wonder if it’s even worth investing in relationships if they’re all meant to expire.
Is the temporary happiness worth the pain? Shouldn’t we walk away before we inevitably suffer? Or maybe relationships just aren’t meant to last. Maybe there’s beauty in the momentary nature of it. Maybe life puts people in our path simply for the lessons they teach us and inspire us to change, to better ourselves, and to not commit the same mistakes again.
I spend time agonizing over the “what if”. What if I had opened up more? What if I had sent that text I held back from sending for fear of appearing too much, too emotional, too… me? What if… So, I try and I fight for my relationships. I fight for the ones who spark something inside of me. It’s terrifying because I know how much the fall hurts if it fails, but I do it. I remind myself I’ve been there before and even though it hurt, I got through it. I always have, and I always will.
