Autism Awareness Month
For Autism Awareness Month, I’m going to be sharing a few of my favorite autism-related products that help Charlie and I with some common autism struggles. While autism affects my and Charlie’s life differently and at different levels, we do share some common difficulties like our sensitivity to sound.
Charlie’s been covering his ears nonstop lately. It seems as if his noise sensitivity is getting worse. I’m thankful we found a useful tool a couple of years ago, though, with Vibes hi-fidelity earplugs. Sometimes we’re just hanging around the house with our little robot vacuum is going around, and it’s hard on Charlie. Sometimes, it’s the A/C system, or it’s Jude singing too loud, or sometimes it’s construction in the neighborhood. His sensitivity to sounds is constant, and there are endless possible triggers on a daily basis. I’m glad that Charlie’s now reaching for Vibes on his own and trying to put them in. We still have to help him to make sure they’re positioned correctly, but “A” for effort!
Grocery shopping and autism
There’s one errand that is particularly hard on Charlie, it’s going to the grocery store. I can totally sympathise as this is also very difficult for me. On top of being filled with people and smells, grocery stores are loud… Between the constant chatter of people, the bip-bip of the cash registers and the music coming out of the speakers —it’s not a surprise to me that Charlie struggles so much.
You can see the discomfort on his face as soon as we enter the grocery store. He’s squinting his eyes, taking deep breaths, and covering his ears. These are his “natural” ways of coping with an overload of noise but often they’re not enough and he needs a little extra help. Vibes is perfect for that!
Vibes Hi-Fidelity Earplugs for people with autism and SPD
First of all, they’re so discreet and convenient. I just keep a little box in my pocket. They also have a cord to keep them around your neck that I love. Most importantly, they’re comfortable and they work. They gently lower the volume of the world around you while still allowing you to hear people talk to you. It’s a great way to still be here while taking the edge off.
I recommend them to everyone who is sensitive to sounds, such a great product to add to your toolkit if you or someone you know has autism or SPD. Vibes also affordable ($23.99) and you can save even more with code:
