Texas, summer, and snacks on the go

We live in Texas, and summers are hot! It can be hard to find snacks that are both healthy and refreshing, and that the boys will actually eat. We’ve been going out a lot this summer: road trips, playgrounds, the beach, and the boys have been having a blast. I really enjoy going on outdoor adventures with them. With the heat, I’m often tempted to keep them inside but they have so much energy that they need to go out and have fun. It’s important for all of us!

We’ve been trying to go to places where they can play in the water like splash pads and pools. I always bring snacks that are convenient, easy, and refreshing. I don’t think this is going to be a surprise to anyone: we are a watermelon loving family. The boys could eat an entire watermelon in one day. That’s happened more times than I can count. Today, I want to show you all the ways you can eat watermelon, and why it’s a summer favorite in our household.

3 ways to enjoy watermelon

When the kids are having fun, it’s sometimes hard to get them to stop playing, and take a break to drink water. It’s important for them to eat and stay hydrated though. I love watermelon because it’s a great way to keep the kids hydrated and with a full belly. There are so many ways to eat watermelon on the go. My favorite way is the simple and classic way: slices. I like it because the kids just munch on it, it’s easy to cut, easy to transport, and it’s yummy. As a photographer, I also love capturing photos of the boys eating watermelon slices. Charlie and Jude are picky eaters but this is one of the snacks they never refuse. Additionally, Watermelon is the best value in the produce section among fruit at only 17 cents per serving. (*2017 Watermelon Purchase Survey, conducted by MyPoints.com. Inc, August 2007).

To mix things up, I also like to cut watermelons into small bites. This worked really well when Charlie and Jude were younger but I still do it when we go out with friends. Cut a bunch of small pieces, throw them in a box with a lid, et voila! An easy, healthy, and delicious snack.

Finally, I also incorporate watermelon in smoothies.

  • 200g of fresh watermelon in small pieces, no black seeds
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 3/4 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 lime

Mix all of these ingredients in a blender, poor into your kid’s cup, et voila encore! I personally love this smoothie recipe for breakfast too. It’s totally kid approved.
